Mise Books

Receipts, expenses, Schedule C

Bookkeeping for a business with something in it — equipment, staff, stock, people you send 1099s to. Photograph a receipt and it is read, sorted and filed on your own phone.

Getting help

Email is the fastest way to reach a person. Tell me what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead — and if a figure is wrong, what it should have been. That is usually enough to find it.

Common questions

Where do my receipts go?

Nowhere. They are read by your own device and stay on it. There is no account to create, no key to paste in, and no server of mine in the middle — which is also why scanning works in a stockroom with no signal.

Your records sync through your own iCloud account, so an iPhone, iPad and Mac show the same books. That is between you and Apple; I never see it.

It says my receipts are read "the simple way"

Reading a receipt properly uses Apple Intelligence, which needs a recent iPhone or iPad and needs to be switched on in Settings. Where it is not available the app still reads receipts, using the text recogniser built into every device — it is rougher, so it asks you to check the total before saving rather than presenting a guess as fact.

What is free, and what is paid?

Free: scanning receipts and sales printouts, sorting by category and vendor, monthly totals, export to Excel or CSV, sending a month of receipt photographs, and seeing which line of Schedule C each category belongs on. Keeping personal spending instead of a business is free too.

Paid — $49.99 a year, and your first month is free — is the tax side: the year put onto the lines of Schedule C, equipment and depreciation, stock and cost of goods sold, contractors and 1099s, the tip credit, closing a year, more than one set of books, and the year-end package for your preparer.

Try all of it on your own books for a month before you pay anything. Cancel before the month is out and you are never charged; cancel later and the tax side stays until the end of the year you paid for. Your books, exports and receipt photographs are yours either way.

Can I keep more than one business?

Yes, with the subscription. Each set of books keeps its own receipts, categories and report, and nothing is ever counted across two. You can also keep your own personal spending as a separate set, which gets a breakdown of where the money went rather than a tax form.

What does "Mise" mean?

From mise en place — the kitchen habit of having everything in its place before service starts. Roughly, "meez". That is the whole idea of the app: the work is done before the deadline arrives, not during it.

Is this tax advice?

No. The app organises your records and shows where they land on the form, so a tax preparer has less to ask you for. It does not file anything and it is not a substitute for an accountant.

Cancelling

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by me: on your phone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the tax side; your books, your exports and your receipt photographs stay exactly where they are.
